Gameplay

Werewolf Online is played in alternating phases: Night and Day.

Night Phase:

During the Night phase, players with special roles take actions in a specific order. The game guides through each role's turn. Players see a waiting screen until it's their turn. It is always possible to use the chat.

Order of Actions:

  • Cupid (if in play): Cupid wakes up and designates two players as lovers. These players are now linked, and if one dies, the other dies of heartbreak.
  • Werewolves: The Werewolves wake up and silently agree on a villager to kill. They can choose a Villager independently. The game chooses the villager with the most votes, or chooses at random if there is a tie.
  • Seer (if in play): The Seer wakes up and can choose to view the role card of one player.
  • Witch (if in play): The Witch wakes up and has two options:
    • Use the healing potion to save the villager chosen by the Werewolves (can be used on herself).
    • Use the poison potion to kill another player.
The Witch can use each potion only once during the game and can choose to use neither.
  • Hunter (if in play): The Hunter does not wake up at night. However, if the Hunter is killed during the Day phase, they can immediately choose another player to eliminate as well.

Day Phase:

The Day phase begins with the game announcing who was killed during the night (if anyone).

The remaining players now openly discuss, either via external voice chat or game chat, trying to deduce the werewolves' identities. Players can accuse each other, defend themselves, form alliances, and use any information they have gathered to sway the opinions of others. You can use the notes functionalities to write down all information.

Kill voting:

After a period of discussion, the game calls for a vote. Players vote to eliminate the player they suspect is a Werewolf. The player with the most votes is eliminated from the game and reveals their role. In the event of a tie, the game will choose one of the voted players.

End of the Day Phase:

The Day phase ends after the vote, and the cycle repeats with the Night phase.

Electing a Mayor:

  • At the end of the first day, and again whenever the Mayor is killed, a new Mayor is elected.
  • Any player can be nominated
  • Players vote for the player they want to be Mayor.
  • The player with the most votes becomes the new Mayor.
  • In the event of a tie, there is a run-off vote

Strategies and Tips

Werewolf Online is a game of social deduction, bluffing, and strategic thinking. Here are some tips to help you excel in the game, whether you're a Werewolf trying to remain hidden or a Villager seeking to uncover the truth:

General Tips:

  • Pay attention to details: Observe players' body language, tone of voice, and voting patterns. Subtle cues can reveal hidden intentions.
  • Build trust (or sow distrust): As a Villager, try to establish yourself as a trustworthy source of information. As a Werewolf, spread misinformation and create doubt.
  • Think strategically about voting: Don't just vote based on hunches. Consider the potential consequences of eliminating each player.
  • Be aware of alliances: Players may form alliances, both genuine and deceptive. Try to identify these alliances and use them to your advantage.

Werewolf Strategies:

  • Blend in: Act like a Villager, participate in discussions, and express concern about the Werewolf attacks.
  • Create confusion: Cast suspicion on other players, especially those who seem to be on the right track.
  • Coordinate with your pack (secretly): Use subtle cues or coded language to communicate with other Werewolves without revealing your identities.

Villager Strategies:

  • Share information carefully: Don't reveal too much information too early, especially if you have a powerful role like the Seer.
  • Look for inconsistencies: Pay attention to players who contradict themselves or whose stories don't add up.
  • Trust your gut: Sometimes, your intuition can be a powerful tool in identifying the Werewolves.

Role-Specific Tips:

  • Seer: Use your information wisely. Consider revealing part of your knowledge to guide the Villagers without exposing yourself to the Werewolves.
  • Witch: Be patient and strategic with your potions. Save them for crucial moments when they can have the biggest impact.
  • Hunter: Be cautious, as your ability can be a powerful weapon for both sides. Choose your target carefully if you're eliminated.
  • Cupid: If you're a Villager, try to link two players you trust. If you're a Werewolf, create chaos by linking a Werewolf with a Villager.
  • Lovers:
    • Lay low: In the early stages of the game, try not to draw too much attention to yourselves. Act like regular Villagers and avoid making any strong accusations or taking risky actions.
    • Protect each other: If one Lover is accused or targeted, the other should defend them vigorously. Your survival depends on each other.
    • Coordinate your votes: Discuss who you'll vote for during the day. Aligning your votes can be crucial, especially if one of you is a Werewolf trying to mislead the Villagers.
    • Be aware of the risks: Being a Lover can be dangerous. If one of you is killed, the other dies as well. Weigh your actions carefully and be prepared for the possibility of sudden elimination.

Tips for Online Play:

  • Type efficiently: Be mindful of your typing speed and clarity in the chat. Use abbreviations and concise language to convey your thoughts quickly.
  • Minimize distractions: Close unnecessary applications or websites to avoid distractions during the game. Focus on the game chat and the actions of other players.
  • Use the note-taking feature: Take advantage of the in-game note-taking feature to keep track of information, suspicions, and alliances.

Remember, Werewolf Online is a dynamic game where adaptation and quick thinking are key. These strategies and tips are just a starting point. The more you play, the better you'll understand the nuances of the game and develop your own unique approach to deception and deduction.
